چکیده

The story begins in St. Petersburg in 1738. There Daniel Bernoulli proposed a solution to the “St. Petersburg Paradox” by introducing the notion of a utility function. The problem is formulated in somewhat flowery terms as a game. It was proposed by Nicholas Bernoulli, a cousin of Daniel, in a letter from 1713 to Pierre Raymond de Montmort. Suppose I offer you a random sum of money where the amount is determined from subsequent tosses of a fair coin in the following way. The payoff equals 2 ducats if the first heads appears on the n’th toss. Of course, this event has probability 2, so that the expected value of the payoff equals

Solving a bi-objective manpower scheduling problem considering the utility of objective functions

This paper presents a novel bi-objective manpower scheduling problem that minimizes the penalty resulted from employees’ assignment at lower skill levels than their real skill and maximizes employees’ utility for working at a special skill level in some shifts or on some days. Employees are classified in two specialist groups and three skill levels in each specialization. In addition, the prese...

Multiple utility constrained multi-objective programs using Bayesian theory

A utility function is an important tool for representing a DM’s preference. We adjoin utility functions to multi-objective optimization problems. In current studies, usually one utility function is used for each objective function. Situations may arise for a goal to have multiple utility functions. Here, we consider a constrained multi-objective problem with each objective having multiple utili...

A New Fairness Index and Novel Approach for QoS-Aware Resource Allocation in LTE Networks Based on Utility Functions

Resource allocation techniques have recently appeared as a widely recognized feature in LTE networks. Most of existing approaches in resource allocation focus on maximizing network’s utility functions. The great potential of utility function in improving resource allocation and enhancing fairness and mean opinion score (MOS) indexes has attracted large efforts over the last few years. In this p...

Emergency department resource optimisation for improved performance: a review

Emergency departments (EDs) have been becoming increasingly congested due to the combined impacts of growing demand, access block and increased clinical capability of the EDs. This congestion has known to have adverse impacts on the performance of the healthcare services. Attempts to overcome with this challenge have focussed largely on the demand management and the application of system wide p...

Time-Aware Utility-Based QoS Optimisation

This paper presents a time-aware admission control and resource allocation scheme in the context of a future generation mobile network. The quality levels (and their respective utility) of the different connections are specified using discrete resource-utility (R-U) functions. The scheme uses these R-U functions for allocating and reallocating bandwidth to connections, aiming to maximise the ac...

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...
